Why does the theatre audience have to sit during performances?

I have been questioning the position of the theatre audience for a long time… Even though I do not object being an audience who sits to view theatre performances, I do explore different options that would challenge the position of the audience in the theatre.

I would say that the theatre audience does not have to sit in order to view performances. The audience can move around and even lies in a hammock. Once I was lying in a hammock to view the performance, En sand røverhistorie (a true tall tale) produced by Teatret Gruppe 38 in Denmark.
